Admissions Exams (SAT, ACT)

The SAT vs. ACT: Which one is right for you?

The SAT has a reading test that takes 65 minutes, a 35-minute writing and language test and an 80-minute math section. 

The ACT includes a 35-minute reading test, 45-minute English test, 60-minute math section and 35-minute science test.

Can I Take the SAT and/or ACT now?


During a normal year, John Dewey HS students will take a PSAT (practice SAT exam) during their sophmore and junior years. 


While the SAT is still currently being administered and you can register, capacity and testing sites may be affected.

You should choose SAT or ACT based on what your chosen college requires.

How do I Take the SAT and/or ACT now?


Tests are given every month. 


Please know that colleges understand that there are limited opportunities for students to take a college entrance exam due to covid. Most colleges are not requiring a test score for the upcoming admissions cycle. While almost all still accept scores, most are  being flexible for students who submit scores later or who did not have a chance to test more than once. 

You should check the college’s website for the most updated information on their application requirements.

Eligible students can register with a fee waiver. You can get a fee waiver from Ms. Mazzola in the College Office. lmazzola@johndeweyhighschool.org

What are your rights when taking these exams?

You may be entitled to accommodations when taking the SAT or ACT. You can find information about how to apply for accomodations on the following collegeboard webpage


In short, the following are eligible, including ENL students who receive accommodations on their regents and school exams:


  1. Student has a documented disability

  2. Participation in a College Board Exam is impacted

  3. Requested accommodation is needed

  4. Accommodation is received on school tests

Translated directions are available in the following languages:

Spanish, Albanian, Arabic, Bengali, Gujarati, Portuguese, Polish, Chinese, Haitian-Creole, Hindi, Russian, Urdu, and Vietnamese.  College Board’s word-to-word glossaries list includes over 100 languages

You are entitled to extra time the FIRST time you take an SAT Exam IF you take it through a school that has requested this accomodations.
